Editorial: Election of New Communist Party Leader Means Tensions Between USSR and USA Guaranteed?
The profession of the new Soviet leader, as well as the text of his report, clearly point to the fact that control of the USSR has been assumed by hawks—and particularly radical ones. Does this mean that Soviet politics will change and the USSR will become hostile towards the West as a whole and the USA in particular? I fear it does.
I may be mistaken—but the communists have proven many times that they can surprise the world. And they won’t do something completely new for them if they turn from their current peaceful politics to its opposite—an exaggerated arms race and an aggressive foreign policy in the traditional points of contact with the western world, as well as new regions.
